This style of Victorian desk was called a "plantation" desk, and dates from about 1850. This antique held all the accounting and papers necessary to operate a large farm or plantation, and the owner took great pride in this utilitarian possession.
Hand made of highly figured solid walnut, the lustrous finish is excellent. Drawers are hand dovetailed, legs are beautifully proportioned. Above is a lift lid over mail box cubicles, the writing surface is natural saddle leather. The back is hand planed and shows square nails.
This American antique furniture separates into two pieces for easier handling. Measurements are 42" wide, 32" deep, 57" tall and the leather writing surface slopes upward from 31" to 33" high.
