The original "Carlton House" writing desk dates from the 1700's, created by famous maker George Hepplewhite for the Prince of Wales' residence, Carlton House, and is still in possession of the Royal Family. The Prince later became King George IV of England.
This fine example is a one of a kind hand made replica, signed on an engraved bronze plate "Oscar Wiba, Park Ridge (Chicago) Il, May 1980."
Walnut banded burl or "oyster" walnut panels plus mahogany have a very fine original finish with especially warm patina. There are charming irregularities, mars and shrinkage separations, see photos.
Drawers have dovetailed solid walnut sides and original brasses, the center drawer has a sliding tray. Gentle curves inside and out are elegantly proportioned.
Measurements of this vintage American made furniture are 49" wide, 28" deep, 41" tall, the writing surface is 30 1/2" tall and legroom underneath is 23 1/2" high.
