An enchanting 1895 era statue of "La Melodie," a young woman with a harp is signed by famous French sculptor, "Aug. Moreau." The patinated bronze finish is original and in very fine condition on cast spelter metal, an alloy of white metal similar to pewter.
Signatures are embossed into the base and engraved on the brass label below. August Louis Mathurin Moreau (1834-1917) was one of the most famous artists of the celebrated Moreau family of sculptors. He worked in Paris from 1861- 1910 during the Art Nouveau period.
This graceful sculpture of a realistic young woman with flowing garb, caught seemingly unaware in a natural setting, is characteristic of his beloved works of art. His expressive works are in countless museums around the world.
The attached fruitwood pedestal is later, this beautiful antique from France is just under 20" tall.
