Hand carved about 1840 of solid oak in Renaissance style, this court cupboard has a marvelous hand wrought iron lock and key, meant to secure something of great value.
The high relief knight with an angel above may suggest it was crafted to hold a weapon. Wonderful stylized dolphins, spiral columns and sculpted heads show great artistry.
The drawer is hand dovetailed, bottom and back panels are all hand chamfered. Joints are secured with wooden pegs on this furniture from the university town of Oxford, England.
The old finish has been waxed, it has warm antique patina and a few stains and mars for character, see photos.
Beautiful in a hall or library, measurements of this impressive historic cabinet are 30" wide, 16" deep and 57" tall.
