A "Cassone" or large chest used as a bench was the most important family piece of furniture in an Italian "palazzo" or family palace. Rich and prestigious trophy furniture, this coffer, trunk or armor chest was filled with family treasures as the bride's dowry gift.
It would have been presented to a bride at her wedding, as an heirloom from her parents. Dating from the 1700's, this spectacular Cassone is a real treasure.
Entirely hand carved of solid walnut, feet are lion paws, above are classical acanthus leaf motifs. There are numerous repairs, replaced pieces, mars, losses and wormy wood as would be expected in authentic furniture of this age.
The often waxed and polished old finish has marvelous antique patina, showing the hand planing and sometimes diagonal sawing marks from master craftsmen centuries ago.
Wrought iron handles and hinges are fascinating, the lock is complete and works with a giant key. This design is characteristic of the Florence area of Tuscany.
Measurements of this grand and historic "Cassone" or bench are 64" long, 23" deep and 23" tall.
