Originally made about 1880 to burn kerosene, a "student" desk lamp has been electrified. This style of lamp was developed to case light down to read at a desk, because the typical font under the flame blocked light where it was needed.
It has a separate font for oil off to the side, fuel traveled through the brass tube to the signed "Duplex" or double wick burner.
The caramel over white opal cased glass shade is later, these antique lamps have opal glass underneath to reflect light downward, and a deeper tone outside, easy on the eyes. The glass chimney fits incorrectly, see photos. American made, it was electrified many years ago.
A brass knob adjusts height from 21" to 31" tall, this picturesque solid brass lamp is 21" across.
