A spectacular Victorian cylinder or barrel rolltop desk was carved of solid walnut about 1870. The deep finish is in very good condition with warm antique patina, there is lots of charming historic character - mars, stains, shrinkage separations from age and wear - see photos.
Burl walnut panels add interest to this American hand made furniture. The leather top writing surface pulls forward. Deep drawers have hand cut dovetails, the upper section lifts off for easier delivery.
Pulls are solid brass and ebonized wood. A compartment behind the kneehole has a lock and key. The curved roll top glides smoothly, hand carved handles incorporate walnut leaves, quill pens and a scroll of paper, the lock is missing.
Rugged and very functional, this grand and imposing desk measures 59" wide, 32" deep, 57" tall and the desktop is 31" high.
