An extraordinary "ship captain's" desk was a style popular on board because of its ship worthy size and functional design.
Hand made in England about 1875, the top section slides forward to create legroom underneath. A bank of drawers on the right is balanced by false drawers on the left plus a pull out leather shelf for extra workspace.
The old finish on warm mahogany is very well preserved with just enough mars and ink stains for antique character. Waxed and polished, an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth will maintain its glowing patina.
A knob inside releases the long thin hinged drawer for pens and inkwells. Sliding a panel inside reveals a secret drawer inside. Drawers have solid mahogany sides with tiny hand cut dovetail joints. At the rear of the top is a gallery for books.
This fascinating furniture measures 23" wide, 24" deep and 35" tall, the top slopes up from 30 1/2" high at the front. With the side leather shelf pulled out, width is 33" overall.
