A fabulous "Blackamoor" statue with a lamp strikes a cavalier pose. A traditional Italian hall decoration, this nearly life size fiberglass, wood and wrought iron sculpture from Italy is about 50 years old.
Hand painted and finished in dark Florentine gold, this work of art is "distressed" to look antique.
During the Renaissance, aristocratic Italians displayed their affluence by having handsome Nubian slaves standing at attention holding a lamp in their palazzos, they showed such wealth that these slaves had no work, they were only ornamental. After the abolition of slavery, the practice continued with these statues.
The lamp has a later shade and has been rewired for American electricity. Size is 28" wide, 14" deep and 73" tall.
