Wonderfully hand made in England for a physician about 1870, this traveling apothecary medicine or drug chest is from the days of house calls. Inside are blown glass bottles with fitted stoppers, some have residue from drugs and some have chips. The lower drawer has tiny hand cut dovetail joints and a fitted tray for a folding pharmaceutical scale and weights. Below are a mortar and pestle and more medicine jars.
The solid mahogany case is "campaign" furniture, with protective brass corners and flat folding handles. The finish is in extremely fine condition on this historic chest. The lock does not work, a brass post secures the drawer closed.
Size of this nostalgic antique is 9 1/2" wide, 7" deep and 8 1/2" tall.
