Hand made in England about 1780, a Georgian period long case or grandfather clock is signed "W.C. Watters, Milnathop."
The original hand painted iron dial depicts the classical Four Elements, "Fire, Water, Earth and Air." Above is a boating scene, there are touchups, see photos.
The mahogany case has a very fine old silky finish. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
The door lock and key work, there are shrinkage separations from age for antique character. Spiral columns and banding are beautiful on this historic furniture. Back feet have been rebuilt.
The brass movement keeps excellent time on a weekly winding and has been professionally cleaned and oiled. A bell strike counts the hour, there is a winding crank. Hand engraved brass hour and minute hands appear original, the second and calendar hands are later.
"Milnethorp" is the current spelling of the village, located in Cumbria in northwest England, near the popular Lake District. A charming market town of 2100 inhabitants, it was once a port but is no longer navigable.
Measurements are 21" wide, 11" deep and 7' 4" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
