This sword and scabbard were purchased in England in 1981 as an antique British Royal Navy dress sword from about 1790, but we have no expertise to have an opinion on this attribution.
The tip of the handle is a hand worked traditional lion head, leading to a filigree royal crown and "GR" monogram, Latin for King George. A curving blade is blued and has gold decoration, subtly hand engraved with intricate designs including the royal motto, "Dieu et Mon Droit." Just below is the motto of the "Order of the Garter, "Honi soit qui mal y pense," or "Shame be to him who evil thinks."
There is very little wear to the blade. Leather on the the scabbard is worn but still supple, length is 28." The sword is 32" long.
