Signed "M&D Feren, Edinburgh," a Georgian period grandfather or long case clock was hand crafted about 1825. The brass movement runs accurately for a week on a winding, and has been professionally cleaned and oiled. A bell counts the hour.
The authentic form mahogany case has matched flame grain and an excellent finish. There have been various restorations over almost two centuries, and the condition is remarkable for its age. Brass hands are hand engraved.
Although this is a citified clock from the capital of Scotland, the hand painted dial has engraved scenes of the countryside, fashionable at the time. Small losses show the painting to be original, see photos. The winding crank is a modern replacement on this antique furniture.
Dimensions are almost 21" wide, 10" deep and 7' 4" tall to the top of the eagle finial.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever.
A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
