Signed in Latin by famous London piano maker, "Frederick Beck" and dated 1778, this clavichord is far from playing condition, and would make an interesting sofa table. There are holes indicating alterations and restorations, this may have originally been a piano.
The sound board is warped and cracked, and to play, this musical instrument would need major restoration. The case is mahogany with inlaid satinwood banding, the base is oak and may be later. There are losses and mars, plus warm antique patina to the old worn finish.
Arnold Frederick Beck (fl. 1772-94) immigrated to England from Germany, and was one of the famous 12 Apostles, mostly German makers of early pianos in London. These historic "square pianos" appeared about 1766, most are in museums today.
Measurements are 57" wide, 20" deep and 33" tall when closed.
