A "santo" or miniature sculpture of the Virgin Mary from the Spanish Colonial Americas dates from the 1700's.
Wood and molded clay, the worn bright painting has chips that show there has been some repainting over the centuries.
There are losses and repairs where this statue was broken, see photos. Such tiny figures were used to teach Christianity to native Americans who were largely illiterate.
Size is 7 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide.
