White Boston Hughes Ontario Antique Nautical Binnacle Ship Compass, Brass Mounts

A binnacle or ship's compass was made in the early 1900's, signed "Kelvin & Wilfred O. White Co, Nautical Instruments, Adjusters of Ship's Compasses, Boston & NY," on the outer brass plate. The compass itself is liquid filled and floats in all directions with a spring suspension, signed "Ontario Hughes Owens Co., Ottawa, Ontario," Canada. The dial is inscribed "E. Canz, Trieste," now in Italy.

The base is mahogany with well worn old crazed varnish and a locking curved door, all mounts are solid brass. There is a holder for rolled nautical charts or maps.

The compass floats inside a removable well worn brass hood with rear access. An electric light has a switch. On both sides are iron "compensating" balls to adjust the compass.

Measurements are 33" wide, 17" deep and 52" tall.
