An Art Nouveau period sculpture is signed "France," by members of the famed family of sculptors, "H&F Moreau." Louis Auguste (1855-1919) and Hyppolyte Francois Moreau worked together on this work of art from around 1900.
"Circee" in French or Circe in English is a Greek mythological figure who was famed for her knowledge of potions and herbs. With her magic staff and cup of magical potions, she could transform her enemies into wild beasts. Circe is depicted with flowing garb in mid stride.
This realistic and naturalistic statue was cast in spelter, a white metal alloy similar to pewter, with original dark bronze and green patination. An engraved brass plate recalls the Moreau's winning a gold medal in Paris art competitions. The wooden base has an original grained red marble finish.
