From the fabled Black Forest, where Germany, Switzerland and France meet, this solid oak pair of bookcases has carved sculptures of dog and lion heads, created for a hunting lodge in the countryside. Dating from around 1880, the three dimensional carving is spectacular, with nuts and fruits in high relief.
The top surface of the base has been revarnished for durability, the rest of the original finish is very well preserved. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
The separate upper section has adjustable shelves on this antique European furniture. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and doors have elaborate paneling.
Measurements are 35 1/2" wide, 21" deep and 99" tall, the base is 40" high.
