A spectacular dowry chest or blanket trunk was hand crafted in Italy about 1890, and would have contained a young woman's bridal linens, silver and pewter as part of her dowry. This traditional furniture would have been proudly displayed as the finest piece in the house, the large size suggests the wealth of the family.
Remarkably intricate marquetry includes cherubs or angels and lavish banding in ebony and satinwood on walnut. Wrought iron hinges are original on the very heavy lid.
The restored finish is in excellent condition, preserving just enough mars and warps for a little antique character, see photos. A door was cut into the left side as shown.
Measurements are 7' 1" long, 31" deep and 33 1/2" tall.
