This solid wormy chestnut bed front is architectural salvage from a cottage in Brittany, France, hand hewn in the late 1800's. The opening could be filled with wood or fabric, used for a marionette theater, bed headboard, fireplace mantel or bookcase. These traditional beds were built into the wall and had curtains to stop drafts.
The fold motif hand carving is charming on this antique furniture fragment, joints have carved wooden pegs. There are shrinkage separations from age. The old finish is well preserved and has been waxed and buffed.
The opening is 35" wide and about 37" tall. Overall size is 81" wide, 8" deep and 80" tall.
