A Victorian 1880 era "ship captain's" desk was also called a "Davenport" after its English inventor, Col. Davenport. In the drawer is a stenciled signature,"P. H. Kennelly of Lafayette, Ind."
The compact size and efficient use of space made this antique furniture functional on shipboard. Solid walnut with burl panels, the restored finish is in excellent condition.
Comfortably angled, the top has a new saddle leather writing surface, the interior has cubicles and tiny drawers. Side door drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and hand carved pulls, there is a tiny pull out hinged drawer fitted for pens plus a glass inkwell. Above the drawers is a pull out shelf with worn green felt.
Dimensions are 25" wide, 23" deep, the book gallery is 34" high, the desktop is 30" tall at the front, sloping up to 32" at the back.
