A large Victorian period original oil painting on board depicts sailing ships at shore with a group of people attending to a many lying down. The signature reads "J. Dyer, June 1882."
There is a label on the back from "Creative Arts Gallery of Chicago," which restored the frame and cleaned this work of art about 50 years ago. There is a touchup on one sail, see photos.
The soft colors are warm, and there is a story being told that is unknown. When well lit, the colors truly glow. The varnish is charmingly crackles or "crazed" from age. A carved gold frame is richly embossed on this American picture.
Overall size is 56" wide, 36" tall and 2" deep.
