Shipper: STORE PICK UP
A splendid Victorian portable travel or "lap" desk was beautifully crafted around 1860, and was the "laptop" of the age. Hand crafted of solid curly or "birdseye" maple, there is inlaid mother of pearl with brass hardware. A rosewood marquetry medallion surrounds an engraved presentation monogram, probably "JS."
Inside are lift up compartments covering secret drawers and an old velvet writing surface. When opened, the top is at a comfortable angle.
The old finish is in very fine condition with inlaid banding. There are small losses and shrinkage separations from age, see photos. The working lock has a key.
Closed measurements are 16" long, 12" deep and 7" tall, when opened, size is 16" x 24."
