A grandfather or tall case clock from the early 1800's is solid cherry, hand crafted in the eastern US. Even under a black light, we find no maker's signature or city.
The brass movement is signed "Wilson," and was serviced and oiled, and keeps accurate time for a week on a winding, counting the hour on a bell. Iron weights and brass pendulum appear original.
Original hand painting on the iron dial is exquisite, see photos. Numerals are so sharp they may have been repainted.
The case has a very fine old finish with warm patina, and has been waxed and buffed on this American made antique furniture. There is a working lock on the lower door and finials are antique but not original. Inside the door are numerous hand inscriptions from owners or clockmakers, dating back to the 1850's.
Measurements are 20" wide, 10" deep and 87" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
