This large dowry chest or trunk was hand crafted about 1870 in what is now northern Italy, but was then ruled by Austria. Their "double eagle" coat of arms is carved under the lid of this solid walnut chest. Inside is a covered compartment for valuables plus a drawer. The lock is lost.
This trunk is "burnt wood" in two senses, the original lavish "pyrographic" engraving was done by hand with burning tools, and also this trunk was nearly lost in a fire. The outside is charred and blackened on this antique furniture, see photos. The fire was a century ago, and there is no burnt smell.
The original finish is worn and burnt, and has been preserved with clear varnish. Joints have carved wooden pegs, hand wrought iron hardware is original. There are shrinkage separations from age.
Measurements are 68" long, 23" deep and 22" tall.
