This Georgian period tall case or grandfather clock from about 1820 has a hand painted scene of "Belshazzar's Feast" from the Bible. The richly hand carved case is solid mahogany, and the original brass movement runs accurately for a week on a winding.
The clock is signed "C. Dixon of Hexham," England. Dixon is listed in the local library's 1827 list of businesses on Market Street. Hexham is an ancient market town on the Tyne River, west of Newcastle. The local abbey was founded in 574, the present church dates from the 1100's.
In the Book of Daniel, the Babylonian king is giving a lavish feast, as the hand of God writes on the wall. Daniel interprets, and the king falls dead that very night.
There is a signature, "Walker & Hughes" on the back side of the iron dial plate. Professionally cleaned, adjusted and oiled, the bell strike counts the hour.
The restored finish is in excellent condition on this antique furniture, preserving just enough mars, wear and shrinkage separations from age for character. The door has a working lock, the calendar hand does not work.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
