German Antique Hand Painted Pine Blanket Trunk, Bench or Dowry Chest #34371

This picturesque blanket trunk or dowry chest from about 1840 could be a window bench. Original hand painting is artistic. The wonderful hand wrought open iron lock still works with a giant key. Crafted of wormy pine, there is a compartment inside for valuables.

The folk are painting is charmingly worn, and has been protected with clear varnish. There are shrinkage separations from age, see photos.

Bun feet are old but not original on this antique country furniture from Germany. These chests were typically part of a young woman's dowry, filled with her linens and silver to move to her new home after marriage.

Measurements are 45 1/2" wide, 22" deep and 19 1/2" tall.
