This style of English curved bench was intended to stop drafts and gather heat from a fireplace. Also called a "courting bench," the narrow seat and straight back kept a couple from getting too comfortable. Hand crafted of solid walnut and ash about 1750, there are numerous restorations over the centuries.
The old finish has been preserved with clear varnish. Genuine rose cut and square nail heads are visible on this traditional antique furniture.
A similar bench is at Anne Hathaway's cottage in Stratford upon Avon in England where Shakespeare sat in the 1500's.
Measurements are 67" wide, 24" deep, 51" tall. The seat was carved from a single wide plank of solid walnut and is about 15" deep.
