Shipper: STORE PICK UP
A spectacular Victorian period portrait of a beloved pet mastiff dates from about 1890. This original oil painting on canvas bears the traditional Latin inscription in the background, "Cave Canem," or Beware of the Dog.
The canvas has a significant restoration near the bottom as shown, and was presumable laid down on board many years ago. We find no signature on this American work of art, there are undecipherable initials on the back of the frame.
A grand and imposing frame is oak with embossed gold moldings, there are various restorations, see photos.
It is interesting to speculate on an owner of the means and sentiment to honor a pet with such a monumental portrait.
Overall size is 41" x 56" and 3 1/2" deep.
