A spectacular Victorian Renaissance sofa and chair set from about 1870 was hand carved of solid walnut with burl panels and delicate inlaid marquetry medallions and banding. This large and comfortable set has recent upholstery that is clean and unworn.
The sculpted classical heads are almost certainly the work of famous American furniture maker, John Jelliff of Newark, NJ, but there is no proof. His distinctive designs plus deep and comfortable seats are unmistakable.
Jelliff lived 1813-1893, and has furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, among many other museums.
The restored finish preserves original genuine gold leaf accents, and is in excellent condition on this American made antique furniture. Reglued to serve another generation, frames are strong and tight and seats are comfortable and supportive.
Measurements of the chair are 27" wide, 31" deep, 43" tall and the seat is 20" high and 21" deep. Sofa size is 69" long, 34" deep, 49" tall and the seat is 20" high and 21" deep.
