This sweet little chair was hand carved of walnut with ebony inlaid marquetry of an alpine deer is from the Black Forest, where Germany, France and Switzerland meet. The artistry is exceptional on this traditional European mountain folk art from about 1890.
A screw on the bottom releases the upper hinged seat and back, revealing a secret compartment underneath. The frame is sturdy but has a little flex, owing to its design.
The old finish is very well preserved, with minor mars and wear for a little antique character.
Measurements are 18" wide, 17" deep and 37 1/2" tall, the seat is 17 1/2" high and 13" deep.
