Hand carved of walnut for a palazzo in northern Italy, this magnificent library or office file cabinet from about 1900 has three dimensional sculptures of lion heads and classical motifs. Lavish artistry captures the Renaissance manner.
A key operates the sidelock, which secures the bottom drawer plus seven removable cloth bound file boxes with brass handles. One for each day of the week, these are similar to the file boxes shown to Queen Elizabeth every day. Inside are inscriptions in Italian.
This antique furniture has an excellent restored deep finish for durability on the top, the rest of the original finish is very well preserved. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
The bottom wood drawer has hand cut dovetail joints and an original brass knob.
Measurements are 22 1/2" wide, 17" deep and 58 1/2" tall.
Masterful details are imposing on this historic piece. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints. Keys are handles only, locks do not work.
