This hand carved solid cherry phonograph is the only one of its kind. The hand painted signature reads, "Mart Tonia by Martin Prois, April 2, 1922," and includes his portrait.
Prois spent three years carving the case using only a handsaw and a pen knife. His unique design included pictures of his farm and church near Cokato, Minnesota, west of Minneapolis.
The record player mechanism works very well playing standard 78 rpm record of the era, and is signed "Heineman of NY." Otto Heineman produced various models of phonograph mechanisms, and was later sold to Columbia. There are volume and speed controls, the tone arm is restored.
The hand carved case has folk art engraved panels depicting a piano and a singer, a farmhouse scene and a church with a musical angel. Scenes are banded in inlaid mahogany.
There is an excellent restored finish on all sides of the unusually shaped cabinet. A supply of antique records that fit into the storage compartments is included with this antique American made player.
Size is 38" wide, 20" deep and 63" tall.
