Dating from the 1870s, this wonderful Victorian English portable lap desk contains a secret door that is activated by pressing a false screw at the top of the interior frame with the back of a pen, see video. Pressing with a finger will not activate the spring.
The box is made of flame grain mahogany with original brass mounts and hand cut dovetail joints on the drawers. There are compartments for ink and pens. The lock, which has no key, is signed "Turners." An adjustable support is under the writing surface. The upper felt surface has a finger hole where there was once a lock.
The restored finish is in very fine condition preserving some mars and dings for character. There is wear to the felt writing surface as well as shrinkage separations from age on the lid, see photos.
Size is 20" wide, 11" deep and 7" tall. Desk opens to 18" deep.
