Elegantly made about 1895, a Victorian lift-lid compact desk like this is often called a "Davenport" desk after its designer or a "ship-captain's" desk because they made such good use of tight ship-board quarters.
Solid walnut with matched burl panels, this wonderful antique has a leather-top slant lid and carved paw feet. The finish is original, with remarkably little wear and beautiful patina. The compartment under the lid is finished, inside are 3 tiny drawers with beautiful hand-cut dovetails. Behind the right side door, there are also 3 drawers that have been rebuilt. There is a small chip on the right hand side of the gallery, see photo.
Dimensions of this charming furniture are 39" wide, 23" deep and 33" tall, the desk leather surface slopes from 29 1/2" high at the front to 32" high at the rear.
