Herschede was the Rolls Royce of American tall case or grandfather clocks, and this is a wonderful example. The chime is played on 9 tubes, and the mahogany case is in excellent condition with little wear. An intricate gold-plated filigree on the burnished dial is characteristic.
There are levers for silent/strike, silent/chime and the choice of familiar Westminster, Whittington or Canterbury melodies, which are strong and resonant on the nickel tubes. Brass pendulum and 3 weights are original to the 8 day movement, which has been recently oiled and runs well.
There are tapered and fluted columns in solid mahogany. Probably about 60 years old, this is classic antique furniture. The movement and original crank are signed, and there is a Herschede signature and crown insignia on the dial. Inside the door is engraved "Model 216," and the original brochure is included.
Measurements of this imposing clock are 21" wide, 13" deep and 81" tall.
