Very charming, this Victorian jewel of a diminutive desk was called a "Davenport" after its Victorian inventor. It is also referred to as a "ship captain's" desk, popular on board because of its compact size.
Hand made of solid walnut with curly and burl grain about 1870, pulls are hand-carved. The leather writing surface lifts, to a finished interior with tiny compartments and drawers, fronted in birdseye maple. A carved gallery supports books on the top.
On the right side are four drawers, all with beautifully hand-cut dovetails, drawer fronts on the left side are false for the sake of symmetry.
The gleaming satiny finish is superb on all four sides of this picturesque antique furniture.
Dimensions are 24" wide, 23" deep, 36" tall, the leather writing surface slopes up from 30" high at the front to 32" tall.
