A classical tall case clock is signed by Glasgow, Scotland clockmaker, "Jas (James) Muirhead," who was active 1817-1841. James Muirhead's father was a ship captain for the East India Company. James was born in 1795 and became a jeweler and master clockmaker. The 1861 census showed 12 children and 7 servants in his prosperous household. He died in 1871, one of his sons succeeded him in business.
The understated mahogany case is marvelously shaped with beautiful natural grain and a banded door, the finish is very fine with glowing warm patina. The lower base was rebuilt about 100 years ago. There are losses to the original hand painting on the dial, and there has been no touchup to the crackled finish, see photos.
The 8 day original brass movement has been oiled and keeps correct time, with a bell strike on the hour. Pendulum and weights appear original from the 1800's.
Dimensions of this historic and stately Scottish antique are 19" wide, 10" deep and 6' 7" tall.
We have found another Muirhead clock, a wall bracket style, offered by a British dealer for $10,140, and a German dealer has a later James Muirhead and Son bronze clock at 37,000 euros.
