This Victorian era shadowbox houses a traditional hair wreath, a hand crafted memento of locks of hair, delicately worked into an arrangement. In the 19th Century, locks of hair from family and loved ones were sentimental keepsakes, kept in lockets and "wreaths" like this.
The hand-carved oval walnut frame has an original finish in remarkably fine condition with "finger" dovetails. We have not opened the box to clean the interior.
A charming example of nostalgic handicraft work, this American antique dates from the 1860's. A tiny note inside is inscribed "Grandma Whipple." Measurements are 12" tall, 14" wide and 3" deep.
