Architectural salvage from an 1890 era Milwaukee home, this richly carved fireplace mantel and surround is solid birch hardwood.
Said to have been built by Matthews Brothers of Milwaukee for the brewery family Val Blatz mansion, we find no signature, but it is also said to be documented in "Lost Milwaukee" and "Milwaukee Landmarks."
The left side is angled, with a little carpentry, it could be made flat. All original, the old finish has warm antique patina and numerous stains and mars for character.
Galleries and detailing are masterful. Original beveled mirrors have a little "smoke" to show their age. Panels are raised, brass hardware appears original. The left angled section is a separate piece, the door has a working lock and interior shelves are adjustable.
The fire opening is 34 1/2" wide and 36" high.
Dimensions are 12" deep on the main right hand section, 94" tall and overall width is 6."
