A hand carved sculpture in alabaster or marble is about 100 years old, an artist's replica of the very famous "Spinario or Boy with Thorn" statue in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
The original bronze statue depicts a young boy pulling a thorn from his bare foot and dates from the first century BC. It was part of the group of classical bronzes given by Pope Sixtus V to begin the museum.
Widely copied over 2000 years, this example was carved in Italy from a single block of creamy white alabaster or marble, attached to a separate round base of grained marble.
It was not signed, as is customary when replicating a famous earlier sculpture or painting. This work of art is in excellent condition with no repairs or losses. There are hairline fractures in the base that are stable, see photos.
This beloved classical antique is just over 11" tall and the base is just over 5" in diameter.
