A dramatic scene of a bullfight in a street is an original oil painting attributed to Spanish Romantic artist, Eugenio Lucas Velasquez. Bold brushwork is characteristic of the artist's work, dating from the middle 1800's.
Born in Spain, he lived 1817-1870. His original last name, Padillo, was changed on a trip to Paris, it is said that he went to the Louvre and discovered that a painting attributed to the famous Diego Velázquez was actually one of his own. True or not, this could serve to explain his subsequent use of the name "Velázquez." He often failed to sign his work, like this picture, and this further complicated his legacy.
This canvas has extensive over painting and there is later canvas applied to the back side, see photos.
Overall measurements are 61" wide, 36" tall and 3" deep.
