An 1895 era secretary desk with a bookcase top was often called a "Butler's" desk, used by the head of a household staff for book keeping. Solid walnut, hand carved detailing and panels are exquisite. The original finish is very fine, the top of the base is revarnished. This English hand made furniture has warm antique patina and lots of character - mars, shrinkage separations on the sides and a warp to the drop front - see photos. Brass hardware is original.
A secret compartment is only accessible from the back side, see photo. The pull out desk has original gold tooled leather with charming wear, the interior is golden birdseye maple, tiny drawers have hand cut dovetails. Doors have beveled glass, the center shelf is removable.
The bookcase top lifts off for easier moving. Size of this elegant but understated desk is 43" wide, 20" deep, 80" tall, base is 36" high and the writing surface is 25" high.
