This early bronze 1900's sculpture depicts an Indian chief peering intently into the distance, and is signed "C. Kauba," a noted Austrian sculptor who lived 1865-1922.
The dark chocolate color patinated statue rests on a rough cut marble base. The finely detailed feathered head dress is remarkable. Artist Carl Kauba was the son of a shoemaker who studied in Vienna and Paris. He is justly famous for his sculptures of the American west, but he apparently never visited America.
This work of art is very natural and realistic, yet apparently all his work was done from pictures. Other statues of his show Indian horses with horseshoes, which of course they didn't have. This expressive work of art stands just over 8" tall, the marble base is 7" across.
