Signed by famous maker, "Chelsea of Boston," this brass ship's clock keeps excellent time and rings nautical bells for ship time.
Intended for mounting on a boat, it also slips securely into the mahogany desk stand. The polished case and spun dial are in beautiful condition on this maritime instrument from the 1970's, according to the serial number.
Chelsea made precision ship instruments for the US Navy, their desk clocks have served in the White House as well. Ever since Teddy Roosevelt was president, there has been a Chelsea clock in the White House.
Case measurements are 7" diameter and 3 1/2" deep, the base is 14" wide, 4" deep and 9 1/2" tall.
Chelsea's significant invention in 1897 was developing a very accurate clock that did not depend on a pendulum, which did not work well on the ocean. The Chelsea clock was actually a giant watch type movement, with a mainspring movement that would operate with precision even on rough seas.
