A genuine Chinese "Coromandel" eight panel screen was created about 60 years ago for a New York City penthouse. The traditional chinese technique applies layer upon layer of colored lacquer topped with black, then was carefully hand carved away to "reveal" the design in subtly shaded tones. The painted lacquer finish has numerous touchups, repairs and crazing or crackling from age.
This beautiful Asian work of art has understated and muted colors in a delicate and graceful composition. The front depicts a peaceful garden scene with a peacock and other birds. Below are still life panels. On the back is a simpler natural scene, as is traditional.
Hinge pins are removable for easier handling of this exquisite antique screen. Each panel measures 18" wide, 96" tall and 1" deep. Width if stretched out completely flat is 12' total, partly folded as shown, width is 10.'
