A wonderful tall case or Grandfather clock has a 5 tube Westminster tune chime, and was expertly crafted about 1915. The 8 day movement is signed by premier German maker, "Winterhalter," and the mahogany case is signed "Colonial of Van Zeeland, Mich."
Cleaned and oiled, the machined brass movement keeps excellent time, with the familiar tune on each quarter plus a strike on the hour. "Silent/chime" and "silent strike" switches are on the face. The dial is signed "Winterhalter, Germany," there are monograms on the upper dial and back of the movement.
Founded 1810 in the Black Forest of southwest Germany, they were among the finest Victorian clockmakers of the day, according to Wikipedia, and went out of business in 1933. Brass pendulum and weights are original, the chime tubes are nickel. The intricate dial has gold plated filigree and numerals, the moon dial is hand painted.
Solid mahogany, the case has fluted columns and a beveled glass door. The original finish is very well preserved, there are small mars and irregularities, see photos. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its antique patina.
The key is a handle only, the door lock does not work. Size of this stately and historic clock is 22" wide, 6' 7" tall and 16" deep.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
