Signed by renowned French sculptor, "E. Rousseau," this statue holds an oil lamp. Probably used as "newel post" lamp to light a staircase, the font is cranberry glass.
The brass burner is original, this has not been wired for electricity. We see no damage to the graceful young lady who is bearing the "torch."
Cast in spelter, a white metal similar to pewter, the figure has a subtle original patina with little wear. The bronze finish is excellent on this work of art.
The movement and grace depicted in this lovely Art Nouveau sculpture is stunning. This period lamp is a genuine antique dating from the 1890's. Grained to look like classic rouge marble, the base is wood.
Eugene Rousseau, the sculptor, according to some sources, flourished 1827-1891. Elsewhere, his sculptures are described in many auction sales as "French Art Deco, early 20th Century." More research is needed.
Size of this authentic antique from France is 35" tall overall; excluding the signed blown glass chimney, height is 26 1/2" and diameter is 5 1/2."
