The Rolls Royce of clocks, this tall case or grandfather clock is signed by premier English maker, "Elliott of London." Entirely original, this historic 9 tube chime movement bears the most recent patent date of 1901.
The wonderfully machined signed brass movement keeps excellent time and has been professionally cleaned and oiled, engraved "J.J. Elliott, 121 -123 Rosebery, London." Every quarter hour, the strike has warm and musical resonance, played on nine tuned chime tubes, each engraved "Harris & Huntington, Pat. July 30, 1901," having shaded coloring as shown. Levers choose either the familiar Westminster tune or Whittington melodies, also silent or strike on the hour.
The intricate gold plated dial is engraved, "Blair & Crawford, Philadelphia," the jeweler who originally sold the clock.
James Jones Elliott was apprenticed in 1865, he went into business for himself at 156 Cheapside, London and patented the original weight driven tubular chime movement that was widely copied by others. The moon dial is unrestored and has losses to the hand painting as shown. Keys are handles only, the locks do not work on the solid mahogany case.
Deep moldings and lion paw carved feet are imposing. The original finish has some crazing from age, all glass panes are beveled.
Dimensions of this brilliant antique clock are 29" wide, 19" deep and 8' 2" tall.
