An outstanding American Empire period "butler's" secretary desk dates from around 1835. Mahogany with striking matched flame grain panels, the gleaming restored finish is in excellent condition. There are several secret compartments.
The top "drawer" is actually a pull out desk with new saddle leather, used while standing or with a tall stool. As on Downton Abbey, the butler is the manager of all the servants, keeping accounts and paying bills at such a desk.
There are small shrinkage separations and veneer repairs, see photos. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms on this American made antique furniture.
Size is 45" wide, 25" deep and 49" tall, the writing surface is 35" high.
